You might think this is about where I started questioning how I treated my own family, and you’d be almost right. Dad, yeah, but I say some of my counselors were all right, and I say it because they convinced me, at least, that I was right to think he was more snake than man. They didn’t judge me for sticking with him, necessarily, but they did point out the certain evils of that position.

Not that it mattered by then, since I wasn’t legally allowed to stick with him. But I was over it after that whole betrayal-and-trial situation, so I was willing to be convinced. Validated, I guess it was.

I thought I was over Brady too. I hate saying it even now, but I’m not sure that’s ever going to happen. I know that fucker better than I know myself, and I’m pretty sure it won’t happen for him either. We loved each other the only way we knew how. Fuck, he’s the only person I ever loved like that, and for a long time I could at least tell myself it went both ways.

Right up to the end. The real end.

I’m not saying he did me wrong by leaving home for real when we were twenty. I’m not even saying he did me wrong by selling me out at twenty-five. Though I’d never admit it to him, he was right, he saved my damn life, and it wasn’t his fault I didn’t want that life anymore. He couldn’t understand a thing like that. Brady always knew how to live and never wanted anything else.

But I probably did him pretty wrong there, in the end.

I just want to explain why, though, so you understand why even after Theo’s family drama set my brain in motion about my own again, I was still hurting too bad to admit just how wrong I’d done. Even when my damage was glaringly fucking obvious.
